As Long As There’s Light, We’ve Got a Chance
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” – John 1:5 (NRSV)
I went to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the second time, and often re-watching a film lets you pick up on things you missed the first time when everything is new. One quote in particular jumped out at me:
As long as there’s light, we’ve got a chance.
I won’t go into detail about the context of the quote (though you should be over spoilers by now…), but my pastor ears perked up. It made me think of the passage from John 1 that is often read on Christmas Eve and around this time of year.
As we head into a new year, especially with all that is going on in the world, in our churches, in our families — may we be reminded that as long as there is light, we’ve got a chance — and we have a Light that cannot be overcome, no matter the darkness.
